Choosing the right retaining wall isn't just about price. The best option depends on your budget, the appearance you're after, the height of the wall, how long you expect it to last and whether the wall may need engineering.

At PRIMEHOUSE.PRO Services, we install a range of retaining wall systems to suit different properties and budgets. In this guide we'll compare the three most popular options:

  • Easy Lock (segmental retaining blocks)

  • Concrete sleeper retaining walls

  • Reinforced Besser block retaining walls

Option 1: Easy Lock Retaining Blocks

What are Easy Lock Blocks?

Easy Lock is an interlocking concrete retaining wall system. Each block has a rear lip that automatically creates the correct setback while locking each course into place.

Because they dry-stack together, no mortar is required for standard installations.

They are available in:

  • Plain grey

  • Coloured smooth finish

  • Premium textured split-face finish

The textured finish closely resembles natural stone and is the most popular choice for front gardens.

How an Easy Lock wall is built

  1. Excavate the footing.

  2. Install and compact a crushed rock base.

  3. Lay the first course perfectly level.

  4. Stack additional blocks using the interlocking lip.

  5. Install geotextile fabric.

  6. Place a 100 mm slotted agricultural drain behind the wall.

  7. Backfill with 20 mm drainage aggregate.

  8. Compact soil in layers.

Unlike traditional masonry walls, the blocks themselves are generally not filled with concrete for standard residential walls.

Advantages

  • Fast installation

  • Attractive appearance

  • Curves are easy to build

  • Minimal maintenance

  • Excellent DIY option

  • Lowest installation cost

Limitations

Easy Lock walls are ideal for retaining heights up to approximately 800 mm without engineering in suitable conditions. Taller walls generally require engineering or geogrid reinforcement depending on soil type and surcharge loads.

Approximate installed cost (800 mm high)

  • Plain Easy Lock: $320-380 per linear meter

  • Textured Easy Lock: $360-430 per linear meter

Option 2: Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls
Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

Concrete sleepers have become one of Australia's most popular retaining wall systems.

Instead of stacked blocks, reinforced concrete sleepers slide between galvanized steel H-posts.

How a sleeper wall is built

  1. Drill post holes.

  2. Install galvanized steel posts in concrete.

  3. Allow concrete footings to cure.

  4. Slide reinforced concrete sleepers into the posts.

  5. Install drainage aggregate.

  6. Install agricultural drain.

  7. Backfill and compact.

Advantages

  • Extremely strong

  • Fast construction

  • Modern appearance

  • Minimal maintenance

  • Excellent for boundary retaining walls

Limitations

Although sleeper walls are very strong, they generally require machinery for installation because of the weight of the sleepers.

Most residential walls up to approximately 1 meter can often be constructed without engineering, depending on site conditions and local council requirements. (RetWall — Retaining Wall Engineering)

Approximate installed cost (800 mm high)

$380-500 per linear metre

Option 3: Reinforced Besser Block Retaining Walls

Reinforced Besser Block Retaining Walls
Reinforced Besser Block Retaining Walls

For premium homes and structural applications, reinforced Besser block retaining walls are considered the highest-quality solution.

Unlike Easy Lock or sleeper systems, every block becomes part of a reinforced concrete structure.

How a reinforced Besser wall is built

  1. Excavate footing trench.

  2. Pour reinforced concrete strip footing.

  3. Install starter reinforcement bars.

  4. Lay Besser blocks in mortar.

  5. Install vertical and horizontal reinforcement.

  6. Fill reinforced cores with 20 MPa concrete.

  7. Install drainage aggregate and agricultural drain.

  8. Render, paint or clad if required.

Advantages

  • Highest structural strength

  • Excellent for feature walls

  • Can be rendered smooth

  • Can incorporate lighting

  • Can be finished with stone cladding

  • Premium architectural appearance

  • Longest expected service life

Limitations

These walls require more labour, reinforcement and concrete than other systems, resulting in higher installation costs.

Approximate installed cost (800 mm high)

$550-700 per linear meter

Lifespan Comparison

The lifespan of any retaining wall depends heavily on correct drainage. Water pressure is the leading cause of retaining wall failure, regardless of the material used. A properly installed agricultural drain, drainage aggregate and geotextile fabric are essential for long-term performance. (What's The Damage?)

Cost Comparison (800 mm High)

Wall System

Approximate Installed Cost

Easy Lock (Plain)

$320-380 per metre

Easy Lock (Textured)

$360-430 per metre

Concrete Sleeper

$380-500 per metre

Reinforced Besser Block

$550-700 per metre

Actual pricing depends on:

  • Site access

  • Soil conditions

  • Rock excavation

  • Existing wall removal

  • Engineering requirements

  • Drainage requirements

  • Boundary constraints

Which Retaining Wall Should You Choose?

Choose Easy Lock if you want:

  • The most affordable concrete wall

  • A natural stone appearance

  • Curved garden walls

  • Excellent value

Choose Concrete Sleepers if you want:

  • Outstanding strength

  • Fast installation

  • A clean, modern appearance

  • Excellent long-term value

Choose Reinforced Besser Blocks if you want:

  • The highest quality finish

  • A rendered architectural appearance

  • Integrated lighting or feature walls

  • Maximum structural performance

  • The longest expected lifespan
