BUILDING A REINFORCED BESSER BLOCK RETAINING WALL – STEP BY STEP TRANSFORMATION
Retaining walls are more than just blocks stacked together — the foundation and structural preparation determine whether a wall lasts years or decades. This project involved removing an ageing failed retaining structure and replacing it with a heavily reinforced besser block retaining wall designed for long-term strength and stability.
Using reinforced footings, steel reinforcement, concrete-filled cores and staged construction, this build was designed to handle substantial loads and provide a solid structural solution.
PROJECT SCOPE
For this project we completed:
✔ Removal of deteriorated retaining materials
✔ Bulk excavation and site preparation
✔ Trenching and reinforced footing installation
✔ Rio mesh and vertical reinforcement placement
✔ Concrete footings and structural base works
✔ Besser block retaining wall construction
✔ Reinforced concrete core filling
✔ Integrated stair access construction
WHY THE FOUNDATION MATTERS
The part most people never see is often the most important.
Before laying a single block, excavation and footing work was completed to create a stable base. Reinforcement steel and structural concrete provide the strength required beneath the wall.
Without proper foundations:
• Walls can crack
• Movement can occur
• Leaning may develop over time
• Drainage failures can create pressure build-up
A retaining wall is only as good as what sits beneath it.
THE BUILD PROCESS
Stage 1 — Excavation and Removal

The old retaining structure had reached the end of its service life and was removed to allow full access and preparation.
Stage 2 — Reinforced Footing Preparation
Footings were formed and reinforced using steel and Rio mesh ready for concrete placement.
Stage 3 — Structural Reinforcement

Structural reinforcement was installed throughout the retaining wall system to strengthen the overall structure and improve long-term stability. Vertical steel bars were positioned to tie into the footing system, creating a stronger connection between the foundation and wall structure.
This reinforcement process helps distribute structural loads more effectively while increasing durability and reducing the risk of movement over time. Proper reinforcement is a critical stage in creating a retaining wall built for strength and long-term performance.
✓ Vertical steel reinforcement installation
✓ Improved structural integrity
✓ Strong wall-to-footing connection
✓ Increased load distribution
✓ Enhanced long-term durability

Vertical steel reinforcement was installed throughout the wall system to strengthen the entire structure and tie into the concrete footing.
Stage 4 — M25 Concrete Placement

Once preparation and reinforcement stages were completed, M25 concrete was carefully placed into the footing system to create a strong structural foundation for the retaining wall.
The concrete pour was carried out in stages to ensure proper placement, consistency and compaction throughout the footing structure. Careful attention was given to levels and alignment to provide a solid base designed for long-term stability and performance.
A retaining wall is only as strong as the foundation beneath it, making quality footing installation a critical step in achieving long-lasting structural results.
✓ M25 structural concrete installation
✓ Precision footing placement
✓ Strong foundation support system
✓ Improved structural performance
✓ Built for long-term retaining wall stability

Stage 5 — Block Installation

Besser blocks were carefully installed and aligned to create the main retaining wall structure. Each block was positioned to maintain consistent levels, alignment and structural accuracy throughout the build process.
Attention was given to spacing, wall positioning and preparation for reinforced core filling, ensuring the retaining wall system remained strong and properly integrated with the footing structure beneath.
Proper block installation plays a critical role in the overall strength, appearance and long-term performance of the retaining wall.
✓ Precision block alignment and placement
✓ Reinforced retaining wall preparation
✓ Accurate levels throughout installation
✓ Structural integration with footing system
✓ Built for strength and long-term durability
✓ Professional retaining wall construction Adelaide
Stage 6 — Final Concrete Fill and Finishing
Concrete was placed into reinforced cores creating a solid reinforced retaining structure built to last.
THE RESULT

The finished project created:
✔ Stronger retaining support
✔ Improved site access with integrated steps
✔ Increased usable yard area
✔ Long-term structural stability
✔ Clean modern appearance
